Life In Looe

Looe is a coastal town in South East Cornwall with a population of 5208.  It is divided into East Looe and West Looe by the Looe river, which flows between them and connects to the sea.  Looe remains a working fishing port on the coast of Cornwall, and visitors can join fishing trips or boat excursions. 

There are plenty of places to eat in Looe.  The town boasts a variety of family friendly eateries, from traditional Cornish pasty shops to fine dining restaurants. Seafood is a highlight, with many restaurants in Looe serving fresh, locally caught fish.

It’s a great way to engage kids and keep them entertained as you explore.  Purchase the treasure hunt as an app for £9.99, or buy in advance and have it sent as a booklet. 


3. Polperro Model Village & Land of Legend

 

Just a short drive from Looe, the enchanting Polperro Model Village and Land of Legend exhibit make for a magical outing. Start by wandering through a detailed recreation of Polperro, complete with cobbled streets, quaint cottages, and bustling harbour scenes, then explore the Land of Legend exhibit which brings Cornwall’s folklore to life with immersive lights, sound, and animation, captivating visitors of all ages.  


Kids will adore the interactive displays, while adults will enjoy the nostalgic charm and rich cultural history.  This attraction offers a perfect blend of whimsy and education, ideal for a family day out.  


4. Adrenaline Quarry 

The place to go in South Cornwall for adrenaline junkies is Adrenaline Quary.  Near Looe, Adrenaline Quarry offers thrilling activities for adventurous families. From zip-lining across a quarry to go-karting and axe throwing.  There's even an aqua park.  There’s plenty to keep older kids and teens entertained.  Adrenaline quarry offers discounts for large group bookings, but please check the age restrictions beforehand.


5. Siblyback Lake 

A 30 minute drive from Looe can take you to Siblyback lake.  A picturesque lake and area of outstanding beauty surrounded by Bodmin Moor.  The lake is free to visit and offers something for everyone of all ages, whether you want a calm relaxing picnic, or some time kayaking on the lake.  There are cycle trails, walking paths, a kids play area and a cafe.  Kayaks, canoes and paddle boards are available for hire, although you are also welcome to use your own.


6. Looe Beaches 

East Looe Beach

East Looe Beach is the town's closest beach and perfect for a family day out. The sandy beach is great for building sandcastles, playing beach games, and splashing in the shallow waters. The beach is also well-supervised by lifeguards during peak season, ensuring safety for your little ones.

When the tide is out, explore the rock pools to discover marine life. Kids can have a lot of fun finding crabs, starfish, and other sea creatures.

Hannafore Beach

Hannafore Beach in West Looe is a rocky beach that’s ideal for rock pooling and exploring. It's a great place to spot marine wildlife, and the views of Looe Island are spectacular.  Hannafore beach is much quieter if you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

There are lots of other beaches near Looe that are well worth a visit when you are looking for fun things to do with the kids.

7. Lanhydrock Country House & Estate 

A thirty minute drive from Looe is the National Trust Victorian country house and estate of Lanhydrock.  Visit the house to see the 'upstairs and downstairs' side of Victorian living, and learn about the conservation of the property.

The grounds are extensive and beautiful with a formal garden and 1000 acres of parkland, woodland and heath.  You can even hire bikes to explore your surroundings.  There is also a cafe for a well earned tea and cake after your explorations.  Dogs are welcome too.

8. Looe Harbour & Heritage Centre 

One of the most popular attractions in Looe is the harbour.  Looe harbour boasts plenty of things for the family to enjoy.  Spend some time on the quay crabbing. All you need is a line, bait, and a bucket. Kids will love the thrill of catching crabs and watching them scuttle about.

If you want to get out on the water enjoy a family boat trip from the harbour. There are various options available, including fishing trips, wildlife-spotting tours, and sightseeing cruises along the coast.  You can even take a glass-bottom boat tour to explore the underwater world without getting wet. These tours offer a unique view of marine life and are both educational and exciting for children.

You can also fin the Looe harbour heritage centre, complete with a coffee shop for your cream tea, a must have when in Cornwall.

9. Looe Valley Line Train Ride 

Take a scenic train ride on the Looe Valley  Railway Line. The journey from the market town of Liskeard to the fishing port of Looe offers beautiful views of the Cornish countryside.  From woodlands to the sea and coastline, in particular the last two miles Looe provides stunning scenery.  The train is one of the best places to take in the areas of outstanding natural beauty, and a fun  experience for kids who love trains.

10. Looe Island (St George's Island)

Take a boat trip to Looe Island, a nature reserve owned by the Cornwall wildlife trust, and one of Cornwall's best preserved natural areas. Guided tours are available, offering insights into the island’s history and wildlife. It’s a great opportunity for kids to learn about conservation and enjoy the natural surroundings.  Kids will love the wild nature of the island and spotting animals.

The island itself is free entry, but there is a charge for the boat.  In spring you can walk across at low tide.
