Games to Play on a Big Family Holiday

Emma Morrell

Here at Hirasté we love a group holiday.  Not only do we set you up with the best places to stay, we are also here to help you create amazing memories.  Whether you are young or not so young, we have some great recommendations of fun family games to play on your big family holiday that will keep everyone entertained.

With a little bit of pre-planning you can pack all the essentials you need for hours of fun for the kids and the adults.

Board games

Board games are a classic and many holiday homes have their own selection for you to use.  Everyone has their favourite that comes out on a games night.  These are some of our favourites to play as a large group:

Speak Out

The perfect game for lots of laughs and giggles.  Players wear a mouthpiece that prevents them from closing their mouths.  They must say phrases that their team mates have to try and decipher.  Surprisingly difficult.  Hilariously funny.  Have some napkins to hand for dribbling!

Taboo

Guess the object your team member is talking about.  Your team member cannot say the word or a list of other words associated with the object.  Games like this can be played using just the cards, and the player with the most points wins.  This saves so much space in your luggage.

Pictionary

Don't say it, draw it!  Pictionary is an excellent game for the whole family.  Make it even better using a large drawing area, such as an easel or white board.  Pictionary can provide hours of fun for everyone.

Monopoly

Classic games don't come more iconic than Monopoly.  Holidays can be a great time to spend quality time together and teach your kids the life skills of Monopoly!

Trivial Pursuit

Trivial Pursuit is one of those great games for families because of all the additional card packs you can get.  Question packs specifically aimed at kids, or question packs for specific interests such as Harry Potter.  It's a great team game too for large groups.

Card games

There are plenty of games that can be played with a traditional park of cards that are easy to learn.  They also come in really handy to teach kids maths skills too!

The best family card games include:

      Rummy

      Go Fish

      Black Jack

Baloney (Also known as a different more adult name!)

      War

      Crazy 8's

      Cheat

When talking about card games we have to mention Uno.  A simple game that really brings out everyone's competitive side.  The more people you play with the less likely it is you will ever get to the end of the game.  It goes on forever!

Activities for kids & toddlers

Younger kids and toddlers will need to blow off some steam and games that keep them moving are a great way to do this.

Scavenger Hunt

This can be a great way to get the older kids involved by asking them to set up a scavenger hunt for the younger ones.  A bit of pre-planning and you can grab some prizes form the pound shop before your holiday.

Balloon Games

There are plenty of games you can play with balloons, including the classic 'under, over'.  Make the game even more fun with water balloons.

Disco

Boys and girls love a disco.  Create your own and before you know it the grown ups will be on the dance floor too.

Hide & Seek

Just try not to lose a kid in the process!

Games for adults

When the kids are in bed the not so child friendly games can begin.  The only question  is are you brave enough to play these with your extended family group?!  Are you prepared to find out things you might not want to know about your Mother-in-law?!

Some suggestions include...

      Cards Against Humanity

      Taskmaster

      Mr & Mrs

      Murder Mystery

      Escape Room

Family games for kids and adults

There are so many great family-friendly games that are fun for the whole family that are a  variation on the classic board games.  These are brilliant games to keep all ages entertained and great fun to play as a group.

Twister

It's great if you are missing your yoga stretches!

Pie Face

Are you brave enough to face the cream?

Charades

This game takes on a whole new element when you play it with kids.  Their minds do not work in the same way as ours!

Quiz

Music, film, general pub quiz game.  There are loads of questions online.  You could even prepare a quiz before your group holiday,  or ask around the group to see if anyone fancies being quiz master.

Jenga

Up the ante on this great game by writing dares on some of the jenga blocks.  The one that pulls the dares from the stack has to do the dare or face a forfeit.

Fun games for outdoors

If your holiday property has lots of outdoor space make the most of it with some outdoor games.

      Tag

      Rounders

      Obstacle Courses

      Egg and Spoon Race

      Swing Ball

      Sack Race

      Three Legged Race

Classic party games

Kids can still get bored on holiday.  A great way to keep them entertained is to bring out some old faithfuls.  Kids will love playing these classic party games.  And the bonus is, little to no equipment is required to play them.

Do you remember these party classics?

      Musical Statues

      What's The Time Mr Wolf?

      Simon Says

      Apple Bobbing

      Sleeping Lions

      Blind Mans Bluff

      Musical Bumps

Holiday games for teens

A group of teenagers can be so much fun.  Drag them away from their phones and get them joining in the family fun.

Cup Pong

Cups + Table + Ping Pong Ball = Cup Pong.

Get a point by landing your ping pong ball in the cup.  Use lots of cups and if you get it in the one furthest away you get 10 points.  Perfect activity for indoors and outdoors.

Meme Game

There are lots of different versions of the meme game available to buy.  It's a bit like card's against humanity only with pictures and less swearing!

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

This game defies explanation, because it sounds ridiculous.  Keep these 5 ridiculous words in mind. As soon as there is a match between a card and a spoken word,  slap your hand on the central pile of cards.  I have no idea why, but it's a great game.

Karaoke

Who is game enough?  If your teens are at that shy awkward stage, a game of finish the lyrics is a bit easier than performing in front of everyone.
